Cartier s Double Mysterious Floating Tourbillon
The master watchmakers at Cartier use a sapphire crystal dial that has been treated to reduce glare, and they carve an opening in it that matches the size of the tourbillon. This creates a perfect illusion of the tourbillon s frame floating in space. To achieve this illusion, they keep the supporting frame s dial in rotation and place the driving oscillator s minute wheel on a pivot. This pivot is designed to limit the internal resistance torque of the mechanical device supporting the tourbillon, successfully transmitting power to the tourbillon while allowing the entire mechanism to complete a floating rotation every minute. Thus, as the tourbillon rotates in clear open space once per minute, its frame also undergoes a complete self rotation. The secret to this achievement lies in a set of gear teeth arranged around the edge of the sapphire crystal dial, connecting the dial to a large gear that makes one complete rotation every minute.
This magical watch is equipped with a finely crafted manual winding mechanical movement from an independent watchmaker, representing years of development. For example, calculating the speed of each moving component requires countless measurements to minimize energy consumption. The tourbillon frame completes a full rotation within its specific space every minute. To enhance the efficiency of this moving device, the weight of each component in the movement has been minimized, allowing for better control of the inertia of the rotating components, including the dial and titanium tourbillon frame. Although the weight of the floating frame has been reduced to a minimum of 0.28 grams, part of the weight compensating for the regulating mechanism and the frame itself is made of K material and positioned opposite the tourbillon, ensuring balanced weight distribution on both sides, thus creating a dynamic balancing effect.
